New Delhi: Maoism in India started way back in 2004 when the CPI (ML), People's War Group, and the Maoist Communist Centre of India merged together to form CPI (Maoist). 

The kingpin of Indian Maoists is “Ganapathy”. His real name is Muppala Lakshmana Rao alias Ganapathy. He is the General Secretary of CPI (Maoist).

“Politburo”, comprising of thirteen or fourteen members, is the highest decision making body of the party. However, in between 2007 and 2010, around six members of the party were killed or arrested.

The two most prominent Politburo members are Prashant Bose alias "Kishan-da" and Katakam Sudarshan alias Anand. Security forces killed two Politburo members M. Koteswara Rao, popularly known as Kishenji, and C. Rajkumar knows as Azad. 

From 2005 to 2011, security forces have arrested nine politburo members of the CPI (maoist).  Their names are – Sushil Roy, Narayan Sanyal, Pramod Mishra, Amitabh Bagchi, Kobad Ghandy, Baccha Prasad Singh, Akhilesh Yadav. Ashutosh Tudu and Anuj Thakur.



The main armed body of the CPI (Maoist) is Central Military Commission which is responsible for directing all Maoist attacks in India. 

Apart from CMC, the party has also raised state military commissions.

The armed Maoists working under the directives of Central Military Commission are headed by Nambala Keshava Rao. His popular name is  Basavaraj. 

Anand and Arvindji are another two members of the CMC. They issue commands to Maoists, when and where to attack. 

The party hierarchy consists of the Regional Bureaus, which look after two or three states each, the State Committees, the Zonal Committees, the District Committees, and the "dalams" (armed squads).

The  military wings of Maoists, the People's Guerrilla Army (the military wing of the PWG) and the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (the military wing of the MCCI) also merged together. 

Among these People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) is the unified military organization. It is segregated into three sections — the Basic, the Secondary and the Main squad.

All the PLGA members are volunteers and they do not receive any wages.

He was released in payroll on bail bond in 2012, when his physical condition was deteriorated. He had joined Communist party of India in 1963. He was a revolutionary Comrade, a comrade of revolutionary spirit, who always fought for the interest of the oppressed people. Not only the Indian, the oppressed people of the world will always remember Comrade Sushil as a leader of world proletarian movement. Lal Salam ! Comrade Sushil. 

CPI (Maoist) is operating through 128 frontal organisations

The Naxal insurgency is not limited to the eastern or central parts of the country. It is slowly advancing in the north too. 

According to a recent Intelligence Bureau (IB) internal report, the banned CPI (Maoist) is operating through 128 frontal organisations in Haryana, Delhi (NCR), Uttrakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala.

Though the IB's internal report has established growing Naxal activities in Punjab, there is no information about the exact number of frontal organisations active in the state.

While no arrests have been made recently, the Jalandhar Police in January 2009 arrested Jai Parkash Dubey from Phillaur, a senior Communist Party of India (Maoist) Naxalite, who was trying to revive Naxalism in the state.

Former chief minister and newly-elected Amritsar MP Captain Amrinder Singh said in his address delivered during the Chintan Shivir in Jaipur on January 2013: "All 22 districts of Punjab have reported Naxal activities. When I was the chief minister, only two districts had Naxal presence."

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, during a state plan meeting in New Delhi in April 2012, had warned the Planning Commission functionaries. 

"The farmers are facing challenges like falling agriculture income, rising agriculture debt and high farm investments. If nothing is done soon to deal with this impending crisis, there would be Naxalism in Punjab," Badal had said. 

Director general of Punjab Police Sumedh Singh Saini, however, said no naxal activity has been noticed in the state, and refused to comment any further.

Meanwhile, the IB report states that while eight CPI (Maoist) frontal organisations are active in Haryana, activities of nine frontal organisations are under scanner in Delhi NCR.

The Maharashtra police on Friday arrested Delhi University English professor GN Saibaba on allegations that the professor had close ties to Maoists elements.
GN Saibaba was earlier under inquiry after police had found questionable material on his computer during a raid. The professor's name had earlier come up during questioning of two other maoist sympathisers.
The professor who is wheelchair bound and 90% handicapped, was earlier questioned in January on his alleged ties and had claimed at that time, the material posessed by him was purely for academic interest.
GN Saibaba has been publicly agitating against Operation Greenhunt, an operation the government continues to deny the existence of.
GN Saibaba was born in Andhra Pradesh's Amalapuram district and has been a close sympathiser of the left movement

Two days after peaceful polling in insurgency-hit Bastar zone, the Red brigade carried out two separate strikes within a span of one hour, killing 14 people, including five CRPF men and seven people returning from election duty, in south Chhattisgarh.

It took the Maoists barely 10 minutes to target an ambulance after 10 CRPF personnel boarded it to return to their camps. The rebels detonated a powerful blast at Kamanar near Darbha in Bastar district, about 350 km from state capital Raipur. Five jawans were killed on the spot.

Another five personnel were injured and were air-lifted to Raipur for advanced medical attention. In the span of 11 months, this is the third major attack by the guerillas in the Darbha region.

In another blast triggered by the rebels seven poll staffs were killed and five others injured at Ketulnar in Bijapur district. According to Bijapur police, the poll officials were returning from Kutru to the district headquarters in a passenger bus. "After the blast, the Maoists opened fire which was repulsed by the security forces who were deployed nearby for road opening operations," the police source said.

Sunil Kujur, the Chhattisgarh chief electoral officer, said. The Bastar Lok Sabha poll saw 52 per cent turnout on April 10.

The landmine blast near Darbha came as a surprise since the road was recently built. "It appears that the Maoists planted the explosives before the roads were built and the blast was triggered by someone sitting 150 metres from the spot," Bastar superintendent of police Ajay Yadav said.

The ambulance was thrown up in the air and landed some 15 metres away from NH-30 where the incident occurred. A four feet deep crater was formed.

CM Raman Singh condemned the attacks by calling it a "cowardly act".
